tan-lioe-ie-baliTAN LIOE IE was born and raised in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. Tan attended lectures in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Jakarta and later enrolled in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Udayana in Denpasar, graduating in 1996 with a BA in Economics.

His poetry, inspired by nature and Chinese ritual and mythology, and thematically centred around love and human existence, has appeared in national and local magazines and newspapers including Horison, The Bali Post, Berita Buana, Berita Nasional, Harian Nusra and Minggu Pagi.

In 1990, Tan was awarded first prize in a national poetry contest sponsored by Sanggar Minum Kopi and in 1994 received the annual Taraju Award from the Taraju Foundation for his poetry. In addition to poetry he has also written many short stories and essays. His poetry collection Kita Bersaudara has been translated and published under the title We Are All One.

Tan has also published numerous poems in anthologies like Perjalanan , Taksu The Ginseng Sahayun ,Festival Puisi Persatuan Persahabatan Indonesia-Amerika XIV SurabayaKebangkitan Nusantara I & II ,Nuansa Hijauand Cerita Dari Hutan Bakau . Tan is also active with the Sanggar Mimum Kopi (SMK) community in Bali and edits two magazines, CAKand Paradox.

He was invited to the Tasmanian Readers' and Writers' Festival in Tasmania, where he was also writer in residence in Hobart, and this year participated in the Winternachten Overzee in Surinam. Tan writes: “I do not intend to dictate through my poems. My poems are only to remind the readers about what they have already known.“

His latest poetry collection is entitled Malam Cahaya Lampion .
