Bernardine Evaristo (United Kingdom)
Her books are Soul Tourists (Penguin 2005), a modern road adventure featuring ghosts from European history such as Pushkin, Hannibal and Alessandro de Medici; The Emperor's Babe (Penguin 2001), a novel-in-verse about a black girl growing up in Roman London nearly 2000 years ago; and Lara (ARP 1997), a novel-in-verse about a mixed-race English/Nigerian family and its roots. Her books have been eight times a Book of the Year for national newspapers, she has won several literary awards and she was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2004. Her writing has appeared in many anthologies, journals and national newspapers and she has been featured on several television programmes internationally, including two documentaries for Deutsche Welle, Germany. She has written for BBC Radio 3 and 4, most recently Madame Bitterfly And The Stockwell Diva (2005) and On Top Of The World (2005). Much in demand on the international literature circuit, Bernardine is one of Britain's most widely toured writers with over 50 international writing tours and residencies worldwide since 1997. International teaching fellowships include the University of the Western Cape (South Africa), Barnard College/Columbia University (New York), Georgetown University, (Washington DC) and the University of East Anglia (UK).
